Cherise King’s prize-winning performance at the 2nd Annual Virgin Islands Idol has already won her a permanent place in the history of Caribbean music. It was a moment that would have left virtually any other singer petrified- the music faltered just as her performance began- leaving her to perform a cappella. Undaunted, she belted out Jennifer Holliday’s “And I am Telling You I’m not Going,” eliciting from the audience a standing ovation; and from many, goose bumps.

The judges, including Reggae star Kymani Marley, awarded her performance 49 points out of a possible 50, which gained her a distribution contract with event-organizer LP Entertainment.

Brooklyn, New York-born and St. Croix-bred Cherise King has been singing professionally since her mid-teens. She cites as influences Mary J. Blige, Garnet Silk, Beres Hammond, and Lauryn Hill, distinctively welding soul and R&B to a Reggae core. She is a songwriter as well as singer, and her Reggae-influenced love ballad “#1 FAN,” produced by Patrick “Jr. P.” Robinson, has topped charts at home and abroad. Her Reggae lover’s anthem “Nothing Compares” has similarly been a success.

King performs has performed with Root1 and The Gap Band at locations including the Divi Carina Bay Hotel. Her talent has been embraced by The Black Star Band, a marriage which ups the ante on their musical success.
